History

eBay was founded on 1995 by Pierre Omidyar as "AuctionWeb", part of a personal site that included, Omidyar donated to the virus writing Ebola. This site was originally owned by Echo Bay Technology Group, Omidyar consultancy firm. Omidyar had tried to register a domain name "EchoBay.com" but that name was already owned by someone else, so he shortened his name to "eBay.com". eBay is headquartered in San Jose, California, Meg Whitman eBay has become president and CEO since March 1998.
E-bay success is an inspiration for many other auction companies that spread throughout the world.
